If you start from scratch and want to take it seriously, you may want to invest into a Canon 60D or a Nikon D7000.
Both are equally good camera bodies, give you the flexibility to control your pictures, at a reasonable price.
There are cheaper cameras with both manufacturers (e.g.
Canon 600D), but you might quickly reach their limits and feel constrained.
Both cameras are good for most topics, ranging from landscape to portraits, still life ...
I would consider my answer valid for the next few months only.
Manufacturers come with new bodies every now and then, providing better quality for almost the same price.

First thing to ask yourself is: How much am I planning to spend? My first advice, don't over spend on the camera body since you are just a beginner.
Once you grasp all the basics and you feel the kit you have is limiting you, you can upgrade to a higher end.
If you like Nikon, go for the D7000.
For Canon go for the 650D
