Politics is indeed given in an organization but it's actually how you deal with it that matters - whether to take or react on it on a positive or negative note. Politics sometimes is good if it's subsequent to a healthy competition-- wherein people involved tends to work way beyond expectations and always delivers excellent results for the organization. On the other note, if it's like bashing out each other and trying to pull one's leg and the other won't make any better in an organization. The upper management should have at least know how to play with this kind of situation. They should not be showing any favoritism that would trigger and feel other employees less to what they're doing. As people manager, he/she should give equal opportunities among his/her subordinates to lessen the possibility of negative politics. Nevertheless, if you get involve with this kind of situation be mature and wise enough in making decisions and react with what you think is morally right to do. Still, you're doing a great job with your craft that's why people sees you as their competitor-- and just continue to do your best and you'll see the good and favorable results therein after. :)

Rather than trying to discourage politics, managers should in fact aim at allowing free flow of knowledge and organizational performance. Let staff speak out their views and understand them, let them talk about their frustrations and engage each other in an open manner.
In fact what we need more of political competent managers in organizations.
