Management by force or fear doesn’t fetch the sustained and desired results.
A CEO or an MD is essentially a leader.
According to Deepak Chopra, a good leader bonds emotionally.
Leaders personality should be such that a.
He is able to inspire people to want to be in his presence b.
He is able to make people to volunteer to be of service c.
He is able to make people to want to perform at their best d.
He is able to make people want to share in the leaders vision e.
He is able to make people want to share in his success.
But leaders don’t need to make emotional bonding seem intimidating.
Each component derives from a simple realization: all groups share emotions, and the more positive the emotional tone, the better.
On the other hand, employment of “Force” in a leadership function only leads to failure.
The fact that one is required to use force, shows that he or she is not able to carry people along.
Force leads to resentment and alienation.
A high performing leader is a vision creator, a team builder.
He is a motivation simulator.
He is a people developer, a task allocater.
While he is relentlessly pursuing the set objectives he never uses force, instead he uses his leadership traits to make people to volunteer to achieve the tasks at hand.
The leader find out what gets in the peoples way of doing their best and effectively addresses those issues for long term benefits.
a lot more can be discussed to cover this topic.
However, for lack of space and time, It can be conclusively said that to lead is the only way for a CEO or an MD to effectively manage the organization

The answer is simple :

*  Either the positive way - which is leading

*  Or the negative way - which is force.

All leadership positions, who practiced the positive way were always successful in achieving their goals. This method is generally used by competent managers.

The negative way always led to the creation of resentment, fear, obstacles, unhappy work environment, unhappy workers, unnecessary problematic situations, confused system of work, non-co-operation etc...  The list in this situation can go on...   This method is generally used by incompetent persons in the management posts, irrespective of he designation they hold.

Exactly what Amrut Desai says.
A CEO or MD or any other Manager, always has the force/consequences whip in the back pocket that can always be pulled out as a last resort but that Force creates, resentment, unhappy workers and eventually loss of productivity and loss of employee and failure.
People don't realize how much it costs to hire and train a good employee so they can be fully productive.
A good leader/manager need to find out the obstacles (personal or work related) on to why the work is need being done and remove those obstacles.
A good leader always takes genuine interest in employees well being and in their career path and make them feel the part of a team which promotes good behavior, team cohesiveness, responsibility, efficiency, higher productivity and accountability.
If a manaer needs to force something on someone or on a group all the time, then that managers needs to self-evaluate his or herself.

One cannot sustain excellence through force.
It may be possible to accomplish individual tasks for a certain period through force however in order to add value in the long term and to ensure sustainable competitive advantage it is important to create an engaged, competitive and ambitious team which is only possible through leadership.
