A Certification should show that one understands the concept, but passing a test is not a guarantee you are getting a good Project Manager. I have found most young graduates need additional training which can be frustrating till they understand what is needed in the business world is not the same what they have been taught
Saw the big picture.
Change my view to the role of stake holders.
Add new points to project manager role.
Certification helps in understanding key concepts as well as relating them to your everyday project mangement practice.
It also helps you to get identified as a prospective candidate in casse you are on the lookout for new jobs.
Certification is always good to get your resume screened or considered. I am not a big fan of certifications, but I am sure it will help you execute things in your wrokplace.
For getting certifications like PMP or CSM, you need to learn process and tools and then appear for the exam and pass. But I would rate a project manager as best when he could really apply those things in work that he learned during his certifications.
Now a days agile has taken over than Waterfall, PMP is becoming lessattractive..PMI-ACP is getting more hits..
So to answer your question, PMP certification helps you to get your resume or candidature considered, but it can become beneficial at workplace only if the practices PMI suggested can be applied /implemented in your project.

Middle East has different standard that PMI
But it was good in the CV :)
For me, I have not done PMP.
But for sure, getting certified is a plus in your CV.
On the other side however, it is not necessary that a PMP certificate holder will do the job better than a PM without a PMP certificate. The expertise got from managing projects along with a PMP course is better than a PMP certificate without expertise.
Sure, the integration between practice and professional study generates some kind of certainty and sensitivity to deal with projects.
