I believe that PR as an industry (agencies) has evolved to be more concerned with giving you the reputation you WANT. There is always a way to magnify "goodness" so it overshadows "badness", depending on how genuinely good or bad you are and how much you are willing to pay for an embellished image.
PR as a personal activity (of a person) or an in-house activity (of a company) will mostly yield the results you DESERVE (afford), though it may not be the perfect one you want., since self-praise is more prone to scrutiny and distrust than others' praise of you.
You can always market or promote yourself by saying: "I am good". But PR is mainly concerned with triggering influential (trustworthy) others to say "He is good" or "This brand is good". Such endorsements can be genuine or simply "bought".
I do agree on that , it plays a major role in your reputation , revenue and awearness but it need some additional efforts will be based on the situation you are using PR for, whether its product or company or person ,
Sometimes but only your attitude can give your reputations what you deserves.

As i think, all you need to do is to deal with everyone in yourwork place as good as you can and that will be reflected on your reputation.
So don't be liar or Hypocrite, just be your self and try to be better.
