If you have a proper disaster recovery and backup paln in place your system will never be down unless the entire building is down.

In the case that you do not have a disaster plan to cover this then you would first have to determine the cause of the problem and resolve that problem.  Perhaps the server is not down because of the server itself but because of some dependency system, like internet or the network or power.

Assalaamal'aikum!!!!!!!

It helps, but we as an IT Professional always have to keep second, third, fourth.......options. Because our motive is to save the data first then recover it.

The reason of failure may be the bandwidth issue allocated to your server, so i am going to discuss this concept.

I don't know the actual scenario of your organization but if you are dealing with large amount of data and your company allows then try to have some help of "Cloud Computing". I know from security point of view it's not too much secure. So keep those data which are not frequently accessible and not so much important on the cloud and keep all the important data on your main server.

What happens when too many requests comes on your server it always creates problem if you don't have sufficient bandwidth previously allocated. So, i will suggest you to either increase the bandwidth or use cloud computing.

Thanks and Regards

I need to follow the Disaster Recovery Plan documents which shows how to recover from any kind of disaster, such as; this power shut down problem, and the steps to recover it. Note, the Business Continuity Plan, shows how to keep the business running by installing a back up recovery solutions which is consistent wth the company budget and risk level of occurance.

In such case we must follow Disaster recovery plan and business continuity plan. But if we do not have any such plan and still system is down then we must rescue the data first.

Generally, every company keeps a back up server but the important question is whether the back up server is up to date?, is it OLRT or how much is leg time? If back up server is not OLRT then leg time must be properly communicated to users so that they will know how much is the potential data loss.

As soon as any disaster happens, we must first try to save data by securing the location. If location itself is in danger then we must secure the server by shifting it to safe place. Further course of action will be immidiate back up of data and communication to users.

As Faiz explains, the procedure would be something like that. But, keeping the concept of disaster recovery as well. Having just a spare server, and jotting the failover mechanism won't help unless you have your servers on disparate location.

Now, having said that, I believe aftermath the disaster, explanation would be hard being on the post of a manager. Stakeholders and bussiness makers won't be pleased if their precious SAP portals aren't reachable. That now calls for the skill and patience to listen and getting your team as soon as possible to power up the server again. Keeping a backup always helps, but data, yes, that needs something extra. It is a must for every organization to keep their tapes | backup medias to more than one location in case of anything - deliberate or incidental.

Cheers!

First, we must have a recovery plan to handle any failure, then we have a corrective action. and can make it through:

1- Online backup

2- Offline backup

3- Offsite backup

First ensure the business continuity with the backup server. Second, analyze the reason for the problem in the server. Third, arrange ways and means to up the main server ASAP or replace the same as the case may be.
