An employee needs all the three from the manager at various levels. When he joins the organization he needs Coaching, the slowly and gradually comes the mentoring and finally the monitoring. However the story does not end there from time to time we all need these three basic stuffs from our managers and so dour managers from theirs. It is an ongoing process which will never come to an end because that is one of the line line of the Organization.

In commercial industry, initially coaching is required from the manager to polish the skills and then on later stages mentoring and monitoring should be done to promote at the managerial level.
What an employee needs most from his manager is faith and trust. A little faith and trust would enable an employee to be a fast learner and to do his tasks with more confidence.
So i would additionally say MENTORING.
