How long should you stay in a job before you try to apply for a higher position? Does it look bad to have several jobs on your resume?

It depends on the situation of job as full time or part time or volunteer or internship or fresher. I think every job seeker  must have self assessment bench mark. For example:

1. Fresher: No need higher position, he or she can apply for gaining job experience.

2. Internship or volunteer: Can apply for executive or assistant officer.

3. Experience: Need to stay in the organization in any position at least02 years then can try for upper position.

Several jobs within a short time, it creates a bad impression to employee by the employer.

At least3 years on a job is good enough, but if you feel that you are not learning and not able to add value to the company, then spend1 year and make a move.

Personally opinion, Trying to apply higher position is at least3 years and make sure that we meet good result from the current job. But for change a job (no higher position), at least1 year.

Nothing bad to have several job in resume, as long as someone can meet good result at his/ her job. It can be plus point that he/ she is adaptable. Moreover, for internship/ part time job during study is very possible to have different job/ field. Thank you.

There is no fix term for an ideal duration. However, hoping job within a year or less than a year is something which seems not suitable. I think2-3 years seems decent with one employer and if any issue arises then one must switch ASAP. However, I worked with my first employer for5 years and its full of learning and growing but at last year due to better opportunity and no chances of growth I switched to recent employer.

Well, for me one year is my threshold before I ask for a promotion or a higher position. If you mean transferring in another company in your question, I think I will not have a definite time for it, but if I've stayed in the company for more than two years and there is still no room for a higher position, then that's the start that I will look somewhere else.

Having different jobs on the CV will only look bad if the duration that you have stayed in those companies are only months. It will give them the idea that you are always switching companies and you cannot stay long, which will be a question of loyalty. On the other hand, if you have many different jobs from different companies and you have stayed with them for so long, probably more than five years each, then that won't be a problem and there could be an individual reason for each transfer that they made.

If you are a fresher, you can change job after one year but after2-3 short term jobs, stick to one job for at least4-5 years. If you are an experienced one, you can change job after2-3 years to a higher post and it does not makes any difference.

The best way to put it... As long as your showing progress and achieving goals.. And have two positive reviews based on performance ... That will support you in getting promoted to the next level as well as increasing salary... As for having lots of jobs in your Cv, having short periods of commitments shows lack of loyalty.. which will raise lots of questions as to why you left...
