Quality Engineer vs. Process Engineer: Which would be a better starting job position for an industrial engineer?

Recently, I was offered a job position as a "Process & Methods Engineer" in a decent company. However, in the mean time, the quality assurance department in the same company has a vacant position as a "QA Engineer". The HR manager explained that he is flexible in switching me to any department that suits me best within the90-day probation period.

As an industrial engineer, I want to know which position would be more compatible with my academic qualification and also which would be a greater asset to my resume for future opportunities.

I think process engineer will support your resume more, however QA engineer is more suitable for your qualification.

regards.

You are lucky to have opportunity of becoming process engineer.

Process engineer deals with problems encountered when converting raw materials to products during plant operation. Its job nature is difficult as compared to quality engineering because you have to visit plant many a times a day either it is hot or cold outside. You have to tackle the problems in equipment operation with other engineers.

Quality job is easy and deals with products formed. You spend your all working hours in laboratory and conduct tests at regular time intervals, point out and suggest other engineers if quality standards are not met.

I have seen your CV, I suggest you to go for process engineer.

process..they would know the critical control points in each step of the production process...Quality engineers are more focused on the end product or result..

i am not a technical person but i sure can imagine i would like to start as a process engineer rather than quality.

i would first like to see the processes to understand the quality

snags and glitches in processes affect quality

Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with the optimization of complex processes or systems. Industrial engineers work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, man-hours, machine time, energy and other resources that do not generate value. According to the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, they figure out how to do things better, they engineer processes and systems that improve quality and productivity

If you are fresher or less than 5 tears experience industrial engineer, its better you select process engineering job. Quality is quite different field & you will get experience with it as you more involve in process.

It certainly is better to start as process engineer and then move toward quality engineering role. The role of quality engineering requires at least 2-3 years of experience either as design, process, manufacturing or industrial engineer. It can also be useful to start as quality engineer within FDA regulated industries where the role is being developed in a little bit different manner compared to other industries.

I have not been active lately to check your answers along these past years and for this I apologize to you all. I took a look at your answers and the choice seems to be unsetteled. It has been more than three years of working as a Process Engineer in the aviation/defence industry and I'll tell this; It is a very enjoyable job! I believe that I have made the best selection for my career to kick-off and continue with. Yet, I have not experienced the quality engineering aspect but I can tell that It would never beat what I have become.

Wish you all the best in your lives and careers.
