It doesn't matter on what program you are using s long as it provides the "correct" analysis and "correct" design. The important thing is that "the designer must know" when and how the program gives "the correct" data needed in the structural analysis or design.

There is nothing like most important software. It always depends on what kind of structural analysis/ design we want to do. Software is a simple tool. It is always the engineer's discretion to use which software he wants to use or comfortable with.

What is important is be able to read the behavior & understand when it is going wrong. StaadPro, SAP Etabs  Robot Midas etc. are most widely used packages.

I prefer using SAP2000 and ETABS for building structures but I have observed that ROBOT Structural has a very Good automated wind load options.  STAAD is very handy and easy to learn and you have lots of people who you can get advise of using it.  Prokon is good for connection design but a little difficult for doing frame analysis(think of old STAAD way of modelling where you have to input the coordinates and remember the beam number to input the properties and loads).  Don't forget there are lots of new software coming in the Structural analysis, MIDAS, SPACE GASS, Orion, CSC Fastrak.  However, some of them are limited to specific codes( Orion is BS and Eurocode only and SPACE GASS is Australian Code).  Major advantages of ETABS, STAAD and SAP2000 are they have a flexible codes which is more advantageous in GCC area where the type of CODES to be used in your design is usually specified by the Client thus you don't have to buy two softwares just to be able to check the design in different codes, there are lots of people using these softwares who you can learn from and lots of published references so that you can use these3 softwares properly.
