Hi All, -- Thanks alot for your useful contribution, and I would like to emphasize the term ' Smart Laboratory" and what should it includes from my point of view: = The use of "Smart Laboratory" term can be seen in different contexts to imply a laboratory that is designed in a way to optimize its optimal layout, or that incorporates latest technology to control laboratory environment, or that the Lab.
is using the latest technology to manage its scientific activities.
= The progressive incorporation of information technology into all aspects of laboratory operations has resulted in fundamental changes in lab work.
There are two primary areas of technology that apply to a smart laboratory can be broadly categorized as laboratory automation and laboratory informatics.
= In general, lab automation refers to the use of technology to streamline or substitute manual manipulation of equipment and processes.
This field of lab work comprises different automated lab instruments, devices, software algorithms and methodologies used to enable, expedite and increase of efficiency and effectiveness of scientific research and test analysis.
= Whereas lab informatics refers to the application of information technology to the handling of lab data and information, and to optimize lab operations.
It encompasses electronic lab notebook (ELNs), tools used for sample management; data acquisition and processing, reporting and scientific data management (SDMS), laboratory information management system (LIMS) and lab execution system (LES).
= The application of technology in today's labs is required to achieve timely progress and remain competitive.
There is no distinct boundary between lab automation and lab informatics.
At one extreme, lab automation can be interpreted as a field of engineering and lab informatics as a field of information managements, but both contribute to a common objective of enhancing the efficiency of laboratory processes.
