i am using maya for16 years now, before that i was using lightwave +3D max and little Softimage.

Paint Effects still the best, fluids simulation, hair simulation and more
There is no right answer here really. The best program is the one you're best at :) . Some people can create amazing things in the open source program Blender for example.
