The anticoagulated blood should be mixed gently by inversion three or four times, sent to the laboratory in an expeditious manner, and tested within two hours if kept at room temperature (22 to24°C) or within four hours if kept cold (2 to4°C), so that the entire interval between phlebotomy and testing does not exceed24 hours. Prolonged incubation of blood at ambient temperatures for >24 hours results in significantly decreased activity of factors V, VIII, and protein S.
