Admitting of your mistake. Once you have admitted your mistake in all honesty, the problem will then be easier to handle than it would be if you were to lie.
Doing a wrong thing may not be intentional one. So, it is better to accept the fault and try not to happen next time.
f you have done something wrong try to sort things out and fix it. Hiding will make lot worse when somebody discovers it. Though everyone make mistakes, but Mistakes are mistakes it has to be corrected.
I will take care of admitting the mistake with: to whom the creation of such mistakes affect more. If it will not affect anybody by its consequences, or work of others and corrections are possible, do corrections by self is the policy--for technical mistakes. Moral mistakes always worse--if happened --repent on it and take care not to repeat the same or similar in future.
Be honest and accept your mistake. After all we are humans and bound to make mistakes. It takes lots of courage to accept your mistakes.
Acceptance and Corrective Action is the best Approach !!
Admit to it.
Apologize about it.
Correct it.
Don't do it again.

"It depends on the situation and the personality of the supervisor." To elaborate, give examples:
My present supervisor does not like to have his authority questioned. He's fairly new on the job and almost all of the people he supervises have been on the job longer than he has. He's never bothered to learn the procedures, how things are done or how the computer system works. But if any of us tell him that how he wants something done won't work, he gets extremely angry. So, I never tell him he's wrong. Never. Whatever he tells me to do, I smile and say "okay." Then if I know a way to get it done that will work, I do it that way, give him the results he wants and never tell him I didn't do it the way he told me to. He got the results and is happy. I saved myself the stress of being yelled at and gave him what he wanted, so I'm happy.
