Nice question. Common sense is the core lubricant for success in all aspects of life. In safety common sense will tell one that he should work safely and get back to family in safe condition. Hence he will not need to assume things like operational procedures especially in sensitive operations. With this inplace and more, requirements for safe operations like trainings are identified (like in toolbox meetings) and sustainable solutions integrated, hence organisational targets and objectives are met.

There is space for common sense also but in some fields like radiation etc. we have to depend on the procedures and plans. As in the risk perception, it is clear that different persons have different common sense so someone may perceive a risk in a wrong way. If the topic is general then common sense is ok to use but if the activity is specific like atomic radiation or complex chemical reaction, then we should avoid depending on common sense and should depend on the relevant knowledge, or we should consult to the specialists.

Sorry, but I disagree.

What do you mean about "common sense"?

Safety, in my opinion, requires a very appropriate training up, in order to manage unexpected situations in an effective way. Behaving "common sense" can worsen an emergency or an accident situation.

Consider that every serious safety training (think about flight simulators, for instance) leaves narrow space to "common sense".

Bye to all.
