Definitely it is appreciation.It will increase not only the self confidence but also the self respect.Employees will feel proud of their self when get appreciation from the manger side.

Its up to each one personality..
then depends on the achievement...
But i consider most of people will consider financial side as a reward for their achievements, or a promotion (that will involve for sure a salary raise) to keep motivate him/her exceed the limits, professionally speaking...

Rewards typically serve as reinforcers. A reward can be defined as reinforcer only if its delivery increases the probability of a behavior. by my hosesty i want to get rewards.

I believe a company should have an annual reward policy.
I wouldn't mind a pat on my back for an assignment well done at that time and consideration for rewarding bonus and salary increment towards the end of the year if my achievement continues towards the profitability of the company.

طبيعة عملى منذ ار من15 عام كمدير ادارة سواء حسابات او مراجعة ( تدقيق ) او مالية جعلتنى كمسئول عن فريق افضل لى و لعملى الخيار الاخير " Titled the "Employee of the month" او - Praised among your colleagues وذلك لخلق جو تنافسى لتنشيط عمل الفريق و بالتالى الاستفادة تكون اعمق تأثيرا على العمل ككل و ذلك اكيد سيحرك الجوانب المالية على المدى البعيد فإن وجد المادى بالفريق سيستفاد اجلا و اظن الكل يفكر بالمادة على الاقل نظرا لوجود فكر ترشيد الانفاق برؤوس اغلب مسئولى الادارة المالية و ارتفاع الاسعار ذلك جعل هناك تعطش مادى اكثر من المعنوى لكنى اعتبر ان الحافز المعنوى اعمق فى تاثيره على العمل فى فريق العمل

Each employee has his/her own unique set of drivers at any given point in time.
It could be , as examples, finance, recognition, or the desire to make a difference..
and so on. 
A financial driver may warrent incentives or pay increases, a recognition driver may require praise or tangible appreciation notes whilst the desire to make a difference driver may need to see how induvidual contributions have shaped an organisation's growth, performance and productivity.
Additionally, recognising the induvidual's driver is a good management tactic to reward and retain high performing employees.
