How Lean,6 Sigma, TPM, JIT are similar to each other?
These all techniques are focused on continuous improvement (kaizen approach) and involve process re-engineering.
Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology that emphasizes on scientific methods and statistical approach in improving/re-designing processes.
TPM, JIT and many other tools, such as kaizen (although some might disagree), are part of Lean, which is a collection of quality tools that can be used in different ways using different approaches.
Lean is not as disciplined or as organized as six sigma DMAIC or DMADV methodologies, but it can be integrated to achieve a much greater effect. That is why we now have Lean Six Sigma certification.
Think of improvement opportunities as fruits in a tree:
If the fruits are visible and easy to pick, use Lean.
If the fruits are hidden and difficult to reach, use Six Sigma.
If you want to pick all the fruits in the tree, use Lean Six Sigma.
