Academics give a general baseline knowledge on which an entry level person has to build.
It depends on both the individual as well as the organization as to how the entry level person makes progress.
As far as the trainee, he/she has to show eagerness to learn every moment,have patience and look up to seniors when in doubt.
The organization will do well to have a mentor attached to each trainee who will mentor continuously and makes the trainee mature into a competent employee.
This is a sure shot method in succession management and I personally have mentored hundreds of entry level employees in my career and they are all confident employees delivering value to their organization!

Yes Academic could land you to a good job especially in highest profession but still experience is the best..
