It depends on what CMS (Content Management System) you use. If your website is built using Wordpress (like myself) then you can use a simple utility like Jetpack (that is actually a set of tools) and that will tell you page visits and hits on a specific document.
Its relatively easy to setup and its very accurate (it will ignore your tests and your ip when fixing problems so that you don't spoil the stats).
I'm sure other CMS systems like Joomla and Ruby on Rails have similar tools to help you monitor how many people have downloaded your document.
