What is work permit and how its safe for environment and worker?

PTW (Permit to Work) in very simple terms is a document but not an ordinary paperwork. A PTW is usually applied for and raised/issued whenever a non-routine and high risk activity (activities) is to take place on site.  Depending on work location and company policy, what is deemed non routine and high risk in a company may be quite safe (not requiring a PTW) in another company.

Details of work to be done, place of work, tools to be used, all hazards involved in the operation with respect to: PEOPLE/WORKER, ENVIRONMENT, PLANT/MACHINERY and control measures for these hazards are some of the issues addressed in a PTW.

The PTW goes through levels of authorization before it is deemed valid and fit to be used.  The person responsible for the job to be done usually raises a request for a PTW after identifying all the details mentions above.  

Every PTW should have a distinct document number.  A PTW is usually approved for a specified period and may require daily validation depending on the duration of the job and company policy.

Work permit is one of the safety training an offshore or onshore worker must have. It is a permit issued out by a senior supervisor to the supervisor of a crew of workers ready to carry out a maintenance or repair in a plant or on an equipment. Must receive a permit before work is carry out.
