Success in business and in life means different things to different people, and so it should!!!! Whether or not you feel successful depends on how you define success -- and on the tradeoffs you are willing to not just accept but embrace as you pursue your individual definition of success.
Determining whether you are successful is based on answering one question: How happy am I?

CAN YOU BE HAPPY WITHOUT BEING SUCCESSFUL? I am of the opinion that being happy and being successful are two different things.
One can be simply be happy whether or not one is successful .
On the other hand one can be very successful and still be unhappy in life.
Can one claim to be truly successful if one does not experience happiness and psychological well-being? I don’t think so.
It is a very empty “success” if it includes unhappiness and psychological pain.
many of those who had reached the pinnacle of material success and power are still very unhappy.
Here are six of their major complaints.
• They are often driven compulsively to be successful, usually at the cost of time with their family.
• They are worried about what others think of them and are constantly trying to impress others with the symbols of their success.
• They have a hard time experiencing and expressing love in their relationships.
• They fear rejection.
• They are often plagued with a negative sense of self that no amount of conventional success is able to cover over.
• No matter the degree of their material success and power, they feel they don’t deserve their success and fear it could be taken away from them at any time.
You cannot be said to be truly “successful” if you suffer from these six complaints.
Thus, I think that the third metric of success has to be an inner sense of well-being and happiness, which would require eliminating these complaints from one’s life.
So what is success anyway? Let us define success.
Success is a feeling, a state of being, where you feel satisfied, joyful, fulfilled, and like you are doing your very best.
The old sign of success was external, and about what you have.
The new sign is internal—what is called Soul Success, and is from the inside out, based on how happy and on purpose you feel.
Success comes first in thought, then in energy, and finally in form.
We’ve been misled to think that success is a destination or something tangible you can see, like money in the bank or a big fancy house.
Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.
When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work.
This isn’t just an empty mantra.
This discovery has been borne out repeatedly by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the world We have to reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work and create more success, happiness and reward in our lives.
studies on happiness and success, researchers found happy individuals are predisposed to seek out and undertake new goals in life, which often brings them more happiness as well as success in many aspects of their lives.
This is because happy people frequently experience positive moods and these positive moods prompt them to be more likely to work actively toward new goals and build new resources.
When people feel happy, they tend to feel confident, optimistic, and energetic and others find them likable and sociable.
Happy people are thus able to benefit from these perceptions." How many times have you said to yourself: • “If I just had more money, I’d be happy.” • “If I just had a bigger TV/car/house, I’d be happy.” • “If I just looked more like that guy/girl, I’d be happy.” • “If I just got that promotion, I’d be happy.” We oftentimes tie our happiness to our success on what we don’t have.
Certainly ambition is important, but are we deluding ourselves by interlocking the two? To conclude, success in business and in life means different things to different people, and should mean different things to different people.
Whether or not you feel successful depends on how you define success -- and on the trade -offs you are willing to not just accept but embrace as you pursue your individual definition of success.
Still.
Determining whether you are successful is based on answering one question: How happy am I? Forget what other people think.
Ask yourself if you feel happy -- not just at work, not just at home, not just in those fleeting moments when you do something just for yourself, but overall.
If you are, you're successful.
The happier you are the more successful you are.

In my view you are not successful if you are not happy.
Maybe others think you are and it really depends on each individual’s philosophy of life and what he/she considers success in his/her lifetime.

Well...
Definition of happiness may differ from person to person, you can be unsuccessful in your job but successful in your personal life, so ultimately you will be happy if you like your personal life more than your job.
So to find the ultimate answer for this question, in my opinion you need to be successful at least in one thing in your life!

Can one be happy without being successful? A very meaningful question indeed! Linking happiness to success is same like linking happiness / satisfaction with desire / want / need.
It depends on at how one looks at the meaning of being happy with success.
To my understanding putting in ones best to achieve goal gives happiness; irrespective of the level of achievement as long as it also becomes a learning; to further improve putting in the best and to further improve the level of achievement.

Yes.
Happiness is deemed from one's own standard of what brings you happiness.
Success is deemed by the expectations of what other people believe you need to be happy.
Falling into this trap leads many people to: Do jobs they don't like to impress others.
Buying things they can't afford to impress their family or neighbours or people they don't even like.
Appearing like they are doing well at the loss of being true to themselves and heart's desire.
Happiness from spirituality, health, general wellbeing and good relationships and doing work that one loves are some of the key foundations for happiness.
People who really know you should accept you as you are and not as what they want you to be.
