Concrete is good in Compression state and weak in Tension. For both Compression and Tension reinforcement is provided to strengthen it to take enormous loads and have a composite structure.

So Steel reinforcement is added to the tension area of the concrete to support the tension stress carried by the beam or flexure member.There are two type of reinforced concrete first the singly reinforced where steel is added only in the tension area, second is the doubly reinforced where both tension and compression area of concrete is reinforced with steel, both type must achieve ductile failure.
