In my opinion there are some steps to be fulfilled prior to starting an online course:

1. define the course outcome: competence builder - what would participants able to do after the course - or knowledge builder - what would they get if they finish it.

2. decide about the certification, if case: how participants would prove they achieved the desired competence or knowledge 

3. decide about the target group: who would be the course beneficiaries

4. understand how the target group learns: what kind of learners are they (in the vast majority) - visual, auditory or kinesthetic? what is the maximum duration they can focus on a topic? 

5. build the course activities & sequence: content delivery, exercises, quizzes, projects, etc. based on the previous findings about the target group

6. put the content in the right form based on the previous findings about the target group

7. decide about the infrastructure to be used: LMS, phone app, web based

8.decide how you deal with the registration: make it most convenient for the target group to get access to it

9. promote the course through the most appropriate channel

10. start delivery

From reviewing all be answers above I would say everyone is well on track with positive suggestions for you.

For myself, I train Lecturers/Trainers (people) for online delivery and I have found that not all people are able to be online delivers of quality training. Not all people have the ability to confidently deliver and engage with an unseen student from anywhere in the world.

Following a competency conversation with the Lecturer I make a recommendation of their suitability to the Training Director as to their suitability and identify gap training for the Lecturer prior to unleashing the person the world of e Learning.

1. An online trainer requires total confidence and understanding in the product they need to deliver – do not rush into delivering a course, practice first.

2. They need strong communication skill, the same as an online retailer because you are not only training one or more people you are selling the importance of your course, e.g. Safety courses are about people’s lives, very important.

3. You need a passion and honesty for the course, you are delivering and a good way to demonstrate this is by in the first instance try delivering your course over the phone to one of your colleagues be prepared for honest feedback which you need to act on.

4. You will need multiple tools to assist you from wireless telephone headset for hands free access to your computer while discussing/providing feedback of  your course to video conferencing programs (free Skype is great) and a Learning Management system which will provide you with your online classroom. A computer which has the capacity for3 monitors and although people will say it is not needed, I make sure that I am comfortable and have the ability to “get out of a situation” when needed because there are time when a students has knowledge which is equal or better than yours on a particular point. And a3rd monitor allows you to easily research while continuing the conversation. Good multimedia (Flash & HTML) components and today topic specific streaming videos.

5. The ability to engage students, to find out who they are and what existing skills and knowledge they have prior to course entry. This will allow you when needed to use their knowledge to demonstrate a point to other students which you may not be a strong point of yours.

6. Finally you need to start each training session with a sense of humour, a smile on your face and do your best to end the session the same way because students will quickly pick up on your mood. If you could put yourself into your course as a student you will see your delivery strengths and weaknesses, what is engaging and what is boring and of course never settle for a middle of the road approach because your students will drop off and not return. Students are your greatest critics, they are human and individuals and respect needs to be shown to each person, especially when they participate in group class work.

I enjoy my life as an online Trainer/Lecturer to adults and have received wonderful and verbally surprising rewards from my students. I would say to train a person and five years later that person becomes one of your Directors as a result of your online training is personally rewarding and inspires me to continually search for new and improved ways to provide enhanced online training for new students.

once you have the course content, you should take a video of yourself making the course and post it online.

It depends on whether you are looking at technology that would allow you to teach online or from academic perspective. In my view you have to look from both perspective to successfully teach a course online.

 

You need to decide on the topic, learning outcomes, target audience, level of course, whether the course is paid for or free prior to looking at infrastructure.

 

Once you are satisfied with the above you need to look at the infrastructure. There are multiple online platforms like Canvas and free Moodle host providers that would allow you to teach your course for free and offer you a range of Learning Management tools. Although they wouldn't take money directly but you can control who has access to the course from within their infrastructure.

1. Be a student. Start by attending online trainings (Coursera etc.) to get an exposure of the different modes of online trainings available (Video lecture, CBTs with no video, CBTs with no audio)

2. Figure out the best mode for your audience and training needs

3. Prepare a training accordingly and launch

4. In all cases you will need a 'chat' area

Lessons must be student-centered, interactive, and collaborative to engage students through participation. The trainer must be well prepared and guide students to a smooth flowing lesson delivery. Outcomes must be clear and transparent from the start of the lesson to ensure students have a clear direction and they stay on task.
