It depends on the nature of training and type of audience. Training can be delivered in multiple formats such as in-class, on-the-job (OTJ), and the current trend is online. Each format has its own CONS and PROS. But in summary, in-class and online are similar and can work for all audiences. The former is carried out in a traditional class setting, and it can be in the format of a class or workshop. The later also can be delivered in the same formats through the internet (e.g. webinars). The other format (OTJ) is a kind of practical form of training, and usually its used for people doing practical tasks (e.g.manufacturing operators, military activities and similars such as security guards and fire fighters, field operators such as field engineers, practitioners etc.)
When delivering indoor training sessions (outdoor training activities are a completely different story :), basically I let the learners 'to feel free to do what I want'. In this way learning is not only a conscious process but also a condition of 'deep reciprocal influence', hence the time/results ratio is maximized. Not easy and not only based on usual LLP (Lifelong Learning Programme) theories. As a reference please see Carlos Castaneda and Milton Erickson.
