There are a number of things that employers can do to make the workplace happy and stimulating for their employees.
The number one rule is, do not wait for appraisals or reviews to give praise and appreciation. Do so on a regular basis. Recognize accomplishments and work well done, and show your appreciation. Saying thank you to an employee who has put in overtime, or worked hard to complete a project on time, goes a long way. Always show your appreciation for hard work. Treat your employees with respect.
Make an effort to get to know your employees, ask them how their weekend was, ask about their families, show some interest in their personal lives.

If an employee feels he or she has nothing to look forward to, it can result in them losing interest in their work, and negatively affect their performance. Well-earned promotions go a long way in keeping employees happy.
Ensure your work place is healthy and comfortable to work in, good lighting, comfortable desks and chairs, comfortable office decor, a quiet environment, a kitchen with a fridge where they can store food bought from home, all make the workplace more inviting for employees. Giving your employees free snacks once every now and then, is also something they really appreciate. Temperature is often the most common office complaint amongst workers; try to ensure that the work environment has the right temperature for your employees to work in.
It is important for employers to remember at all times that their employees are likely to spend more time at work than anywhere else, so it is important that they are comfortable in their work environment, and happy.
