mechanical engineer is responsible for designing, maintenance of engines whiles industrial engineer is responsible for the design of products and services produced by an industry

A mechanical engineer will have specialist design and modelling skills but no knowledge of general industrial processes. An industrial engineer will have idea of how systems work. If we talk about job roles, mechanical engineer fits better in an engineering department whereas an industrial engineer is best candidate for production department.

Mechanical engineering is one branch of industrial engineering .

A mechanical engineer designs mechanisms starting from basic physics principles or from stock parts. The goal of their effort is to accomplish a task within the thermal, speed, and strength limits that are specified. An industrial engineer seeks to optimize manufacturing or packaging processes. They look for ways to combine operations, eliminate wasted effort, and increase speed for the overall task. Their goals is to find the most economical approach to that industrial operation,

not to be snide... but really an industrial engineer is like a business degree with some extra math involved... basically not increasing in engineering knowledge past the core courses. while mechanical engineers don't take much, if any, business type courses. the difference is huge really and industrials are often considered the lowest form of engineer while mechanical is among the highest. I am a structural engineer, so this answer is really just an educated opinion...

Mechanical engineering deals with a wide range of topics, including mechanics (vehicles, propulsion, industrial machines), thermofluids (power generation, combustion, HVAC, IC engines), materials, ect. On the other hand, industrial engineers take things that other engineers have designed and try to make them more profitable. As one of my professors said many times, "I've seen a lot of mechanical engineers take industrial engineering jobs, but I've never seen it the other way around

Mechanical engineering is more related to applied physics. its applications mainly related to machinery, physical based and heat related equipment, it uses force, temperature and length beside other physical units as measuring units.

Applications are combustion engines, heat exchangers, gas and steam turbines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, casting, pumps, machining, HVAC, and many more.

Industrial engineering is more related to applied statistics and operations research. Its applications mainly related to management and optimization. its the science of decision making. it uses currency (e.g. $ and SAR) and time (e.g. hr and week) as measuring units.Applications are quality, maintenance management and reliability, supply chain, product development, facility layout, risk management...etc

Mechanical engineer set ups the entire machinery and all the stuff by designing, analysing and performing tests like stuff whereas an industrial engineer has to look whether the equipment installed is meeting the enterprise requirements and making them operate to certain capacity.

A guy asks "How is the height of Eiffel" to a mechanical and an industrial engineer.

Mech.Eng. starts by leaving an iron material from the top of tower and measuring the fell down time. Then applies Square root V=2.g.h and finds the hight of Eiffel.

Ind. Eng goes to guard in front of the entrance and ask him then get the answer. It is meters!

It is the difference of them :)
