Leadership is a very vast subject that can be explained generically and specifically. Since you did not specify any situation I believe a clear and concise communication between the leader and the follower about the ultimate destination, and the benchmarks is very important. We can translate this into a corporate culture in terms of communicating the organizational goals and objective is of the same importance.
Trust, respect and of course mutual appreciation which is a result of the first two points. Friendship in business could often be a problem. Trust and respect based on knowledge, skills and show samples is an much better foundation.
