I think, more frequent meeting of team leader is effective for a team. There are some reasons...
1. It is important to make a feel in team member's mind that their contribution is really significant for the company and they are also a key part of the company.
2. Team members get some work pressure which helps to increase productivity.
3.Team members can reduce some stress from their head because their leader guide them.
4.Team members get confidence and feel relax about their performance evaluation because their leader knows their performance. So,employees will try to do more to show their performance to their leader.

Impossible to answer without knowing the dimensions of a team and its distribution in various locations. A team of 500 in various offices in Italy / Dubai /New York or a team of 4 in the same office? If the latter is the hypothesis, there is probably no need to organise formal meetings, as information flows constantly. A team of 30 distributed in a couple of locations may need to meet at least once a month physically, but may be more frequently if deadlines of a project are approaching, or in a crisis situation.
