Phone interviews can be pretty tricky..the interviewer will judge you by the conviction of your ideas/skills and also how clearly you present it. Be prepared for the most basic questions, such as:

1- Could you tell me something about yourself?

2- What interests you about this particular position?

3- Why do you think you would be a good fit for this position? (Sometimes)

4- Have you read about XYZ company?

5- Why would you like to work for XYZ Company?

These are some of the basic questions though there are many more. Avoid using worlds like umm uh. Many other good tips have already been by members, use it. And yes, its okay to get nervous but try not to let it get it to you often. Practice and prepare. Good luck with your phone interview!

In my own thoughts, the worst kind of interview is a phone interview. It puts the applicant in such an ease that he/she can answer anything, with the stress of body language being removed it facilitates the applicant to speak easily.

To get ready for a phone interview:

1) Put your C.V. next to you so that you and the HR administrator can follow in the same pace.

2) Remove any kind of sound pollution or nuisance that may distract you, such as Kids, TV, honking cars,.. etc and talk to the interviewer in a clear voice so he or she can understand

3) Don't chew gum or eat while talking

4) Be direct in your answers and confident

lastly i still think its the worst method of interview cause it eradicates issues that play a significant role in the psycho graphic assimilation of the candidate

Telephonic interviews or interviews over internet mediums have their own set of pros and cons. Preparing for them can be summed up in a5 step process:

1)Preparation: Prepare as thoroughly as you can before appearing for one. This includes company background info along with a list of questions that you would want to ask the employer, depicting your interest.

2)Uninterrupted connection: Ensure that you are seated in a quiet place with no background noise and use an internet connection which has the least chances of distortion or connection drops.

3)Appearance: Present yourself exactly how you would for a physical interview with a proper dress code. Be very clear and sturdy in your vocals and also ensure the background is neat and clean.

4)Be courteous, concise and concentrate. Since the aspect of body language is eliminated in an online interview, these points will help you leave a lasting impression in a limited time session.

5) Follow up by sending a thank you email to the employer for granting you the chance for an interview coupled with a few lines reflecting your eagerness to join the employer.

Preparing for a telephonic Interview may seem an easy job to the applicant but actually it is tricky in some aspects that I will describe below. Firstly, prefer to have a live interview rather than telephonic because your body language gives you much support to control your tension and anxiety during the interview session. If telephonic interview is mandatory due to distance issue then prepare well in advance, make sure of the following points:

1- Request for an advance booking of telephonic interview so that you can enough time (at-least one to two days before) to prepare for the interview.

2-  Make sure, you practice a telephonic interview with a family member at home or with a friend or colleague at your workplace who can conduct a telephonic interview of yours and highlights your mistakes

3- You should know about the Organization and the Position for which you are being interviewed on the telephone

4- Read your own CV well (same CV that you have submitted to the employer who is going to interview you on the telephone) so that if there are some areas of the CV that seem doubtful to you; you prepare yourself mentally for that to answer them confidently.

5- Sit in a quiet place with a glass of water nearby so that the telephonic interviewer gets a feeling that you are really serious about the interview and you really mean business. Sitting nearby television or TV Lounge or in a crowded area would disturb the voice communication between you and the interviewer. And as a result you might loose the opportunity that might be "THE" ideal opportunity for you and leaves a bad impression on the interviewer.

6- If you fall sick on or before telephonic interview day, immediately inform your employer so that they try to re-schedule it otherwise you wont be able to give your best. If they are unable to reschedule then visit your doctor and try to recover from sickness as quickly as you can.

7- Try to practice the telephonic interview from the employer's point of view so that you can actually imagine and think what he might ask from you and expect from you.

8- Just before the telephonic interview; try to take a shower and wear your favourite dress and have a sip of Coffee/Tea/Green Tea to make yourself feel confident and fresh because believe me it effects the interview performance a lot over the telephone if you're sitting in a lazy manner in shabby dirty clothes or lying on a comfortable couch in a living room. Mentally prepare yourself that you are actually sitting in front of an interviewer. This aspect is not to make you frighten from the interviewer but bring a lot of Confidence and Mental stability and responsiveness during the telephonic interview session because interviews are sometimes really hectic.

9- Last, but not the least, be confident on your achievements and credentials whether they are more or less; they are your identification and you need to make them shine by giving a best shot during the interview.

During a phone interview, the hiring manager will be listening to many different aspects of your voice as you answer questions. Hesitation or a lack of confidence can be detected over the phone, and you should work to eliminate them from your process. You can practice for your phone interview by asking a friend to help you, or by recording your own voice as you answer questions. Just as you would be concerned with eye contact and posture during a face-to-face interview, you should listen for your own voice inflection and the flow of your answers. You can practice over the phone, or you can sit back to back with a friend or relative and ask them to give input on how you answer interview questions.

Follow these tips for a successful phone interview:

  • Keep your CV in clear view, on the top of your desk, or tape it to the wall near the phone, so it's at your fingertips when you need to answer questions.
  • Have a short list of your accomplishments available to review.
  • Have a pen and paper handy for note taking.
  • Turn call-waiting off so your call isn't interrupted.
  • If the time isn't convenient, ask if you could talk at another time and suggest some alternatives.
  • Clear the room — evict the kids and the pets. Turn off the stereo and the TV. Close the door.
  • If you have a landline, use that instead of your cell phone. That way, you'll eliminate the possibility of poor reception or dropped calls
  • and all the best in your coming interviews
