it depends on the user proficiency, it doesn't matter the tools you use as long as you can get your job done by any product.

Of course it can, as long as all members in the business have Macs to get the best experience of iWork. With the new iWork for iCloud Windows users would be able to work with iWork too, but as it is in beta stage, then I don't recommend it at all.
Pages, Keynote and Numbers have ways to export to Word, Power Point and Excel, so if you need to send documents to your client you can, and you can also export to PDF.
I work in an office where everyone use Microsoft Office and I've Mac and work always with iWork and I haven't had any problem.In my persona experience Word and Pages work perfectly together, Power Point has some problems with Keynote animations but that's all, Numbers has problems with Excel, so you really need to take a standard here, use only Numbers or use only Excel, but working with both of them is hard.But yes a business can perfectly use iWork instead of Microsoft Office.
