A mistake that most of beginners fall into is using the older versions of the softwares assuming that they are more simple and sort of easier, which is not true, these applications upgrade a day after another to ensure an ease of use for the users and in order to avoid any issues or imperfections they used to face in the previous versions.

My advice would be: stay up to date with whatever piece of software you are using, it's for the best experience.

No logic in using an older version of a software whatever for a beginner or advanced user. It's a good thing to be up-to-date always.

Well, from my personal experience, i'd say learn both the latest version & the one directly before it (not the most old one).....The reason is that the latest will give you a preference as you are up to date, but also sometimes some companies didn't update to the latest one yet (& either will at some point or don't want at all)...so they might not even bother to buy a new one, hence you'll loose the advantage .......It's like any Architect must at least learn how to draw/sketch & read a plan manually beside being able to do it on the Computer .

i believe newer versions are made to make life easier for professionals and begginers, so instead of wasting time with older versions and spend time trying to catch up, it is better to start at the latest.

however, to be a better expert, it is also wise to take a trip down history lane to better appriciate your tools.

Latest version always has fewer bugs and enhancement of performance. but if you got an older version of computer system; no problem about have elder ones as a start. usually software developing doesn't jump too much for features and interface year-to-year.

I prefer Latest version

As a beginner he might think its better to use old version for learning but outside world is using the latest version so if he learns old version then also he will remain as a beginner.

Newest version of course , You must consider that the software has began with the newest version  not with the earlier one where is the problem ?

You will keep your knowledge up to date .

Always stay up-to-date. The latest version will take the same time to learn which the older version will take. So in my opinion, always use the latest versions for the learning or work purpose.

It dose not matter with the newest version or the oldest but only that you can get output quickly by using a newer version of the software.

For personal level i.e 'learning stage' - YES, I would agree keeping up with the latest version would give you an edge...But the company you may end up working for may not implement newer copy right away.  For various reasons such as -  'File formatting issue',3rd party Plugin support and 'bugs till v9.x released. etc rather than v9.0'.

There are times you miss the old tools too...Other times you appreciate the newer functions that you cry as to why you'd learn't the hard way. :)
