The poem, which is part of Alice's adventures in Wonderland, deviates in terms of its shape as it is in the form of a tail (which links with the story of the mouse explored in the poem). The poem also builds on the pun between "tail" and "tale" as it is a tale (story) about a tail (the mouse). The shape of the poem makes it difficult to detect rhyme, which is another instance of deviation.

The poem is quadruple pun and the rhyme structure is that of tail rhyme.
