We cannot say the word as ethical, in today's world customer is knowledgeable and is exposed to Net & media to decide which is good or bad.
No customer takes decision just like that unless its FMCG, he evaluates judges & takes expertise advise from family friends.
It all depends on how our team convinces him to go for our product / service rather than stealing, it all depends on our sales experience we take thru will decide whether the customer will stick to us or go to competition.
The market size will be the same unless we create or explore new avenues, the so called Market leaders, Market Follower, Niche segment take's away their pie from it. From this we cannot come to a conclusion that he has stolen our customers from us..
It depends what you mean by "steal". Is it ethical to entice a customer away from a competitor? Yes of course, that's just business. The competitor does not own the customers. Where the ethics come in is in how you do it.
Since it's competition mean customers are loyal to the part or company which offer good products or services in competition world (steal) won't be the right word .
For junior positions it doesn't make any difference. For key players, loyalty matters.
Do not steal but win over!
Now a days Customer has become another commodity if we don't have them in our business some other will have. It is not stealing it is appealing your business and services to them in a better way.
In other terms because of Customers any business will sustain. Survival is the foremost right of every business and it is human nature to survive in best or worst conditions. It is upto us if we offer them best they will come us.
It is not only ethical but imperative for your continued existence.
Its ethical to divert customers from another company. Otherwise there would not be mere competition in the market.
Re-phrase your question.
It is not unethical to win customers.
It is not only ethical but imperative for your continued existence.

I will say winning the competitors'customers is always advisable than stealing. Else it will affect the market in a really negative way.
