My question is: literary critic in which language? English or Arabic? English literature /literature in English is neither widely read nor allowed to be read in the Middle East (with the exception of a few "open" countries) since it is out of sync with the teachings of Islam. Can you imagine reading Lolita /The God of Small Things/The Company of Women or Fifty Shades of Grey in Iran, Saudi Arabia or Yemen, or UAE, or in the areas controlled by ISIS without being persecuted? So, what will you do as a critic of literature in English? As regards literature in Arabic, there are some chances of success as a critic, but creative writing is less in print; only a few novels, poetry collections and plays, that too with a very poor readership. Once again, you cannot keep your kitchen running as a literary critic. Of course, Qatar, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan and to some extent Oman may support your job.
