QR codes are history. Any technology, no matter how beautiful it is, relies on adoption and adoption is dependent on3 things

1) how big of a problem is it solving? QR codes were never solving a painful problem, there were other ways to solve the same problem

2) What's the monetary implication? This is irrelevant for QR codes

3) How easy or simple is this technology to use? This was the most significant part, ease of use was never there. a user has to download a separate app to read a QR code, come on it doesn't work like this.

The only way I think QR codes could have been widely adopted was mobile manufacturers integrating it in the native camera app.

Anyways QR codes are history. Link shorteners are a better way.

Well its true that in America and Europe the QR-code has come to a silent death with few purpose anymore, but in China its becoming bigger and bigger especially through the effort of Alibaba (an Amazon-like enterprise). Millions of chinese use the codes  to follow their favorite brand on the social media and by this they get rewarded with discounts and all kind of actions.

For an example: Pepsi en Chineze beerbrand Tsing-tao were one of the leading companies introducing QR-code marketing. Last summer there were800 million cans of Pepsi and800 million cans of Tsing-Tao beercans printed with QR code and spread. Users could scan the code and see if they earned a free beer of Pepsi.

Its a type of marketing that is ideal for the millenial consumer, and without the high costs of mass-advertising you still interact and reach the mass. Everybody nowadays has a phone and I think some countries will follow China, through their success.
