An MS in marketing or an MBA in marketing, which one is better?

Thank you for your invite. Ms. Ghada as I mentioned on one of the similar question you posted before that all these certifications are masters degrees. The nomenclature is different university to university. According to my knowledge MS in Marketing and MBA in Marketing are masters degrees and I am sure every company values them as equivalent. Even if you plan to study Doctorate after MBA in Marketing or MS in Marketing, your any of these Masters degree will be treated as equivalent qualification by the universities.

I take it that you want to pursue a career in marketing. There are a few ways to do that, but before the straight answer i would like to stress the difference between both degrees and then give you a few questions that might help you find your own answer.1) BA in marketing is a generalist basic degree. You will make a small salary on the beginning and do a lot of boring (as opposed to creative) work. An MBA is a graduate degree and you are supposed to have at least2 years of experience leading a team of at least5 people before you go there. There are business schools that will let you in with no experience and give you a nice diploma, but when you go to a potential employer they will laugh in your face and send you back to the starting case. An MBA in marketing is above all a master of management, a place where you will perfect your management skills, and also get more strategic thinking and a few other things. For me it was a big behavioral learning experience.Why do people make an MBA? Because they feel their careers could be boosted into managerial roles with more responsibilities and higher pay, but staying within the same industry or career path. However, about80% of people in my class were career changers (let's leave admissions as a separate subject). The ones that did really well were engineers switching to finance. Anyone switching to marketing failed miserably, unless she remained within the same industry (e.g. a pharma sales rep that switched to pharma marketing).

2) questions for you to answer yourself and help you plan your future:Have you already been the boss of5 or more people during at least2 years?

Do you already have experience in marketing?  Perhaps sales?

What do you want to do in the future:advertising?  Social media? Creative stuff?  Events? Marketing consulting? Marketing planning?  Marketing management?

  Marketing project management?What is your preferred industry:Consumer?  B2B?

Low price/mass? High price/ luxury?Pharma?  Aeronautic?  Food?  Financial?  Tourism?Media?  Social media? IT?  Internet?Would you rather be creative or strategic?Would you rather be on your own or with a group of coworkers?Would you pay $100k and forget2 years of salary to get your dream degree?Are you ready to pile up significant debt for a meager salary?

Final note:  based on my experience an MBA will open a lot of doors, but which one you choose and what you do afterward (and your economical situation) won't change much whether you have an MBA or not. 

Last final note:  an MBA is economically worthwhile only if it is from from an Ivy league university. In my case it was a wonderful learning experience.
