It is always an advantage and some times important to know the processes of an organization you are auditing, but it is not necessary or mandatory for the auditor to know it. It is a standard practices for some auditors, to be accompanied with Subject Matter Experts or Process Experts, for audits.
But it always is a better deal if the auditor is from the same industry and is at least aware of processes, if not possessing the working knowledge.

For an IT Audit report , the IT Auditor needs to understand the inner workings of the organization .many individuals have tried to master the art of IT auditing with their MBA qualifications together with their degrees in Information Technology but have failed to do a decent piece of work in IT Auditing . You also need to have an investigative mind with the desire to keep abreast of technology to be a successful IT Auditor
This is essential part in the audit process to understand the running processes in order to identify the risks and missing controls and have better understanding for the process
