we may go for three types of concrete piles:
-Precast piles
-cast in situ piles
-composite piles
the main difference between this different systems is the pile capacity, the we can go for site investigation, loads to be transmitted...
As mr.Kamal Chebbo answered
-Precast piles
-Cast in situ piles and
-Prestressed - Precast piles
but if we divided piles in terms of loads transmitting we get:
-Friction piles and
- Bearing piles
I have read all the answers from my colleagues above but I did not find the satisfactory answers. When talking about the types, the piles are classified in following three types:
1. End Bearing Piles: These piles are constructed in a way that the toe is placed on a firm stratum located at a considerable depth from ground level.
2. Friction Piles: The friction piles or cohesion piles transfer load to the soil in contact with the shaft of pile. In order to increase the load bearing capacity of the pile the diameter in increased to increase the area in contact with soil.
3. Combination of Both: When the end bearing pile get a soil having not enough capacity to take the total load (in case of hard clay soil), the pile is extended beyond its end bearing level to get enough frictional resistance.
Types of Piles are classified as followings:
1- in terms of loads/force transmittingA- End Bearing Piles
B- Skin Friction Piles
C- Combined both them Piles
2-The method of implementation and type of materials.
A-Precast piles
B-cast in situ piles
C-composite pilesD--Pre- stressed - Precast piles
Differences between those types basically are based on the pile capacity and loads shall be transmitted as well as type of soil and its bearing capacity.
1- End Bearing Piles :- It transmit the loads to the soil at the end bearing surfaces areas under the piles
2- Skin Friction Piles :- It transmit the loads to the soil by friction at the piles surface contacted area with the soil.
3- Combined End Bearing /Skin Friction Piles :- It transmit the loads by the combination of both1 and2.
Mainly there are two kinds of Piles
1)Fraction pile
2) End Bearring Pile
1) Fraction pile- in these type the piles, the load on pile is resisted mainly by friction.
2) End Bearing pile:- In that pile you have to bore the insert pile up to hard surface like rock.the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile depends on entirely on the underlying material.
bearing piles point bearing piles Friction piles cohesion piles
a friction pile gets his bearing load mostly from friction along the shaft. A bearing pilegets his bearing load mostly form its resistance at its pile point, normally
In terms of installation : Driven (casing driven -to create the hole by displacing the soil-using a hammer) and bored (hole created by boring and removing soil) piles. Driven piles have larger capacities, but their diameters are limited.
In terms of geotechnical resistance : Friction, end-bearing and combined.
In terms of material : Cast-in-situ and Precast piles.
