In circuit theory, there are two laws for a closed circuit. These are known as Kirchoff's laws.

Kirchoff's first law or the junction rule states that algebraic sum of currents at a node or point is zero. This law is based on the theory of conservation of charge.

Kircoff's second law or the mesh rule  states that the directed sum of potential difference or voltage in a circuit is zero. This law is based on conservation of momentum.
