The first thing is clarity: you must be clear in what you are trying to teach and how you are intending to teach it.
The second thing is relevance: the participants must understand why this information is relevant to them.
The third thing is engagement: if the participants aren't really paying attention, they won't absorb the lesson.
The fourth thing is repetition: we remember by doing things several times
The fifth thing is application: the participants must understand how, when and why they will use this lesson later.
The sixth thing is fun: the whole experience should be pleasant for all.
The seventh thing is testing: checking that the participants have learnt,understood and remembered everything.
Separately, always remember the golden rule for speeches, essays, etc. 'Tell them what you're going to tell them; the tell them; then tell them what you've told them.'
Oh, and a final tip - get the environment right. Corporate training sessions are frequently held in underground rooms that are too hot, meaning that everybody is more or less asleep. Or too cold, so that everybody is focussed on getting warm and foraging for hot coffee. Get the temperature right, the chairs and tables in the best shape for the job, and so on.
The single commonest mistake is being so boring that the entire class lose the will to live.
The second commonest mistake is doing something like holding the session after normal hours: everybody just wants to get home as soon as possible, so for a start nobody will ask a question because that will delay things.
