Selection of topic/Area of interest is important in research. Prepare your mind cautious and Sketch out what to start where to start and how to start, what all requirements needed. Check the lab conditions and make sure you have all the requirements on your work table. Do your research with full of interest. Collect the data's and documets as much as you can. Use the library, refer the scholars/articles/journals of related topic. Interact with your guide/experts in this field.
To do scientific research, do the following steps:
1. Sense the problem
2. Identify the Problem
3. Prepare Theoretical framework
4. Formulate the Hypothesis
5. Prepare Research design
6. Go for Data collection
7. Do the Analysis and interpretation of Data
8. Do Refinement or Implementation
It depends on the research, for example, does it include actual experiments that you have to conduct, or are you using the findings of previous experiments conducted by other scientists?
Next, are you writing an article, thesis etc? If you're writing an article, depending on the direction you are taking, or depending on who you are writing for (magazine, school etc...) you can then research similar articles or topics to your own. Find out what is new and prominent in that field. Do you have sufficient vocabulary for the sciences? If not, update yourself on the language so that you understand what you're researching.
Next, research people, especially experts in the field you are researching about. Try to contact them and let them know you would like their opinion, or if you are using their material you might need permission from them. Make sure you are informed regarding their background and their work. Prepare questions you would like to ask them before hand and don't forget always be courteous.
Visit libraries, check online journals. Try to avoid Wikipedia, unless you're getting a general idea of a topic, or you're looking for possible books to use for reference. Don't quote Wikipedia.
Then structure what you will discuss after your research. Make sure you have an aim, you have an idea of your topic or hypothesis. It is very possible that during research you find another direction to take your paper. Keep an open mind.
