When learning a new language, is it easier to learn the standard language or one of its dialects?

I have learned the standard languages first and then by meeting with locals I try to understand a dialects, which can be quite difficult sometimes. 

Well , it is purely up to self , as per what you think and what kind of a person you are. For me, I always prefer to learn the standard language first and then go to the specific areas!
