The project execution plan sets out the strategy for managing the project, describes the policies, procedures and priorities that will be adopted. It may also define strategies in relation to items outside of the scope of the main contract (as the client's overall project might include multiple contracts for the supply of goods and services, both from external organisations and from within the client organisation itself such as operational and maintenance contracts, the supply of equipment and so on).

It is prepared by the project director, although it is often developed on their behalf by a project manager (or on a construction management contract or a management contract it may be taken on and developed by the construction manager or management contractor).

The progress of the project should be assessed against the project execution plan throughout the project and the project execution plan should be amended and developed as necessary.

The project execution planmight include:

  • Project definition and brief; (a summary of the strategic brief or later the project brief).
  • Floor plans, elevations and sections and site layout insofar as they are developed at this stage.
  • Roles, responsibilities and authorities.
  • Monitoring and reporting strategies.
  • Cost plan and cost management procedures.
  • Risk analysis.
  • Programme.
  • Contracting and procurement strategy.
  • Administrative systems and procedures.
  • Safety issues.
  • Environmental policy.
  • Quality assurance strategy.
  • Client accounting systems.
  • Document control systems and a document distribution matrix.
  • Commissioning strategy.
  • Migration strategy.
  • Operational strategy.
  • Post occupation evaluation strategy.
  • Equipment requirements (inside or outside of the building contract).
  • Unusual or long-lead items.
  • Business change and staff training requirements.
  • Potential consultations

My answer is simple and short

Project planning - is the pre-stage where you plan the stages of the project, determine resources required and approach

Project excution is the actual implemention of the project.

we can say that the project plan is formal approved document used to broadly guide the project and facilitate communication among stakeholders. Project Plan speaks in general about the project, for example it will talk about why the project is undertaken, what value it will add to the organisation, what will be the output of the project or deliverables, who will be involved, deadline, milestones, budget, scope and technology to be used.

A Project Management Plan is a formal approved documents that defined how the project will be executed, monitored and controlled and how the scope will be managed. A Project Management Plan is composed of many subsidiary plans. Project Management Plan is meta-plan of the Project Plan and it is the actual plan is followed by the project team to successfully complete the project

The Difference Between the Project Exucation Plan and Project Management Plan

There are many differences between the project plan and project management plan. Some of them are as follows:

  • The project plan describes the plan broadly with less attention to detail. It deals with high level planning. On the other hand, the project management plan is described with every possible detail.
  • The project plan deals with the “what” part of the project, and the project management plan deals with “how” part of the project.
  • The project plan is a visionary document, it defines the vision. The project management plan is executed to achieve the vision.
  • The project plan gives you the vision to complete the project successfully, while the project management plan defines and develops the system to be used to complete the project successfully.
  • For larger projects, the project plan and project management plan are different, but for smaller projects they can be merged.

Please note that the PMBOK Guide does not differentiate the project plan and project management plan, and therefore this topic is not very important from a PMP exam point of view. I have written this blog post because I thought it would be a good read for you, and you should be able to differentiate these two terms if you ever encounter them.
