AutoCAD is a software with basic tools which can be best used for two-dimensional drawing whereas Soliworks is a full three-dimensional modelling software where you can use it to create three dimensional models of the drawings. Further more Solidworks helps you create drawings more easily. Its is a conceptual design software where accuracy is slightly reduced to improve usability. It is better to know both AutoCAD and Solidworks because you cant build your knowledge from the scratch in Design without coming accross tools from AutoCAD. Somewhere in any part of your design process you will require AutoCAD to process some of the drawings. Solidworks also provides backward compatibility by providing ability to open draft drawings in AutoCAD and also has the ability to open and edit AutoCAD drawings. So its best of both worlds. AutoCAD is the best if you are looking to learn2D drawing tools, while Solidworks is the easiest to learn3D modelling. There are some other software like CATIA, Creo Parametric, NX (Unigraphics), SolidEdge.
Some of these software such as CATIA, NX are widely used by many automotive and aerospace industries. These are software best known for Surface Modelling. Though CATIA is losing ground to NX for many other reasons. But CATIA is also good.
SolidEdge will look like a rip off of Solidworks but its also a good software.
Creo Parametric, previously known as Pro Engineer is also a good software now adopted by many automotive giants for its special features.
Check out every other available software before you start looking for learning any of them. Personally i am coaching all of the above and having hands on industrial experience in all the above software except for SolidEdge.
I would recommend learning both AutoCAD and Solidworks if you have chosen to learn them.
you can use catia is better than solid works but it had more work shop if you want training of catia i can help you
autocad is basic software so autocad is most knwon program
