As a manager we should always be planned to handle the unexpected requests/events. Extending ourselves or the team's time would be fine for some time, but it would cause discomfort to the team if the requests are frequent.
Need to check if the new request is going to impact the current work. If it is within acceptable limits, we do not have issues. If it is impacting majorly, it would be good if we apprise the boss/customer of the impact and propose how we can handle it. Either by adding an additional resource or extending the timelines of the current work.
This would give confidence on us/team to the boss/customer that we can handle the situations in a better way
As a project manager one must be very strong with time management and should always be prepared for the unexpected. An additional task is a very small things to deal with as there must be scope to handle bigger complications without letting work get affected. Giving yourself stricter timelines is the best way forward.
An employer needs to know that his team is there to lend support and at such a time his work should be given priority even if it means a little more time investment after office to do the routine work.
Employers should work on their skills to be able to handle more than one task at the same time. I'll try to handle the urgent work and my usual work together.
