A lot of people in the region who started their own social media and PR agencies did not major in digital media, not even in marketing in some cases, and some of them are doing very well, so is it really worth it to get an MA in digital media especially that the major is not available in MENA region and I'm going to have to travel abroad to study this or go through an MA online program which also costs a lot. So it is worth it ?
The answer is in your question that some of th epeople are doing well not all of them. It is important to have knowledge of whatever work you are doing, and its not only for digital media it is for every field you are working in. Getting education and knowledge is always worthy it helps you to excel in your particlar field.
It crossed once in my mind. Unfortunately if Asia is we are talking about, we are still lack with formal instituion that has digital media specialties in higher stage and if it is exist, they are way too high to afford. Middle East is still pricy for this than in South East Asia region.
However this is a brand new field, and tends to develop faster than any other science since it develops along with the technology, while we know the technology itself changes as fast as seasons changes. I think there will be time when technology will appear to market as fashion did, three to four seasons annually.
I'd rather develop skills with self taught or going to authority certification in digital media and experience to enhance my skills than over spending enroll for MA in digital media for this time. Unless there is a trusted i& reasonable instituition.
First of all, Success in digital marketing depends on application oriented knowledge and skills. Digital Media is a doers world. There is no substitute for hands-experience. Additionally, it is still evolving and by the time the course is conducted, most or some of it might become obsolete.
However, you may know that large corporations do value qualifications but you also need to develop the right knowledge and specialise. Tommorow's world is about super-specialisations since knowledge is growing rapidly and exponentially. A Post graduations is definately about the depth of knowledge you carry. Try also to get noticed in forums and develop your credentials on the social platforms like bayt since one of the trend is that resumes are going to be useless once candidates can prove their skills beforehand through testing and recommendations and other means on the web.
You will find people of all shapes and sizes succeeding and failing, do not try to emulate them. It is a combination of skills that matter. If steve jobs was arrogant, doesn't mean that arrogance will help you, steve jobs has so much more going for him.

Premise:
First, I would like to say that marketing is a talent that grows with practical experience more so than theory.
This definition is being challenged my the emergence of engagement technologies and our urge to understand unstructured data.
What I believe:
It can prove useful if it is backed with experience in certain technologies and certifying agencies like:
SalesForce, Facebook/Google Adwords, Social Experience Management formulas, Email marketing without the use of technology to name a few.
