The reason is simply we don't invest in people (culture and education), we freak out of Innovation as an outcome
I am Egyptian and a big art fan, in fact there is many and various art projects and events in Egypt like Opera House& Art Blue House events, Castle events, Al Ghoreya, Sawy Culture Wheel, hundreds of avant- grade theaters, hundreds of public and private fine art exhibitions and museums, many street art festivals and music festival ( like the Sufi Music festival Sama which i do like so much) , many Cinema festivals, thousand art communities adopted by individuals, youth or expats ... etc, The Art Events Schedule is very busy.
The other fact is that you have to be so close to the art communities and to be a chaser to know there is something going here or there. Nothing announce or covered on media
So i totally don't agree with you Mr. ashraf taha the media is intentionally ignore Art, and insist to promote paltry subjects
The Book fair is not an art event, i consider it as commercial and marketing and the media deal with it as tradition. even though its going from worse to worst.
In the Arab world it remains an under developed genre. With most current expo production there is little opportunity for exhibitors to explore creative, personal, long-term, and analytical approaches to their work. Additionally, there is little access to the needed resources and adequate professional support to initiate and complete their expo (projects)
Media generally neglects covering art exhibition in the world
Globalization, led by the multinationals thrives on promotion of free capitalistic economies, Consumerism & homogenization of culture. Large organizations control the media since they depend on it to promote themselves. They target the youth with new fashion and cultural values. The homogenization of culture helps multinationals to sell more products at an economy of scale. For e.g. women in the gulf follow European fashion and spend more on fashion than Europeans themselves. Media depends more and more on advertising and less and less on subscriptions.
Culture involves society’s art, belief, customs, games, technologies, traditions, and institutions. Marketing can benefit from local art & culture in the design of meaningful logo’s and artistic decors. This can only be done by constantly reminding people of their rich heritage and cultural roots. If we don’t stand for something, we will fall for anything. If youth are attracted to their cultural heritage, they would force the media to follow them. In today’s society, organizations are selling what is sold with least resistance. It is difficult to achieve this when media uses techniques which include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism.
Not in general - in our country Egypt a great interest in art in all its types and the book fair is our best proof of that
It a matter of education. Education in the arab world neglected art so we neglected it now
because they mostly care about the politics and tabloids care about celebs or something not important
the art industry in Arab countries, and block by a few people, who for them art, and sin and the devil and not the art itself they see it as bad but yet, when they go to pray on carpets to draw, they do not talk about this art they have under their feet, as the prayer rug and well weave and draw, this is an art form not to be seen as a thing of its own
I think we are too busy covering all the trouble happening in the region that art exhibitions become just a luxury. Do not expect this to change anytime soon.
Usually the media covering art exhibitions in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi etc.
