PMBOK v5. and Rita Mulkahi's book are very good ,,,but they are focusing on passing the PMP exam and getting the degree...there are also much more gides which provide definitions and strategies of project management (The Definitive Guide to Project Management by Nokes, Sebastian - PMI’s Governance of Portfolios, Programs, and Projects: A Practice Guide - Project Management Pathways by Martin Stevens and a lot more )

but i beleive that even though reading is necessary....but the practical experience is essential....may even more important....one of the reasons is books assume the ideal case but in reality this is never true

I will agree with the PMBOK v5 - and as I have read, it accurately reflects the evolving profession.

There are many handbooks on Project Management dealing with various aspects of Project Management. However, I have found the following book very clear and concise with several nice examples.

Effective Project Planning and Management written by W. Alan Randolph and Barry Z. Posner

This book has chapters. You can read this book in hours spending2 hours per day. The book is very interesting to read and you may find it quite helpful.
