have you ever tried ibeacon by apple, its BLE.. Bluethooth low energy meant to prorvide information based on user location for apple ios users. 

this is one example of IOT and so many others to target customers.

There are many usages depends on the type of company for example a security company can locate a IP to a thing that they want to monitor secure that thing by monitoring...etc

I depends which industry are you working.

Suppose IOT won't help you a lot in Banking domains. But if you are in electrical service provider company you can have lots of opportunities to create business in IOT.

IoT is basically the ability of electronic machinery to either transmit or store information about its performance and usage.

For instance  benefits can be realised in manufacturing industry when techniques like suggestive and predictive analytics is done on this data to extend uptime by suggesting corrective measures in failing machinery, automating maintenance tasks, ordering of spares parts etc.

IoT use is growing rapidly and within the next 5 years it will be widely used. IoT can be used in different industries and for different uses reducing cost and resource consumption.
