Landscaping and hardscaping are like two sides of the same garden coin! Landscaping involves the living elements of your yard, like grass, trees, and flowers. It's all about the greenery and how it's arranged. Hardscaping, on the other hand, is the non-living stuff - think patios, walkways, and retaining walls. It's about creating structure and form in your outdoor space. I learned this distinction when I revamped my backyard. I hired expert irrigation to help out. They blended softscapes (plants) with hardscapes (a neat stone path) to transform my yard into this harmonious space. It's amazing how both elements work together to create a complete, functional, and beautiful outdoor area!

Landscaping refers to any activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land, including:

1.   living elements, such as flora or fauna; or what is commonly called gardening, the art and craft of growing plants with a goal of creating a beautiful environment within the landscape.

2.   natural elements such as landforms, terrain shape and elevation, or bodies of water; and

3.   abstract elements such as the weather and lighting conditions.

Hardscaping refers to hard landscape materials in the built environment structures that are incorporated into a landscape. This can include paved areas, driveways, retaining walls, or any other landscaping made up of hard wearing materials such as stone, concrete etc. as opposed to softscape, the horticultural elements of a landscape.
